Fishing Report

Revised: 02/02/10

The month of February is my favorite time to fish on Guntersville Lake. The female Bass are at their heaviest weight of the year and it is truly the best time of the year for the opportunity to catch the lunker of a life time. The larger Bass will move shallow earlier to spawn than most of the smaller ones. Usually the water has started to warm up some and we start having some very nice weather. Although we will have some very cold nights the daytime temperatures will rise into the high 40's and mid 50's.This warms the shallows very quickly, especially if we have plenty of rain to stain the water.
My lures of choice are Jerkbaits, Lipless Crankbaits(ExCalibur XR-50's)Punisher Spinnerbaits and Gary Yamamoto Senkos. The most important thing to look for is the first green milfoil you can find. I also start my spawn fishing at the North end of the lake, Crow Creek, Raccoon Creek, Mud Creek and Town Creek.
If we have had a few days of stable warm weather I will start looking in 2 to 3 ft. of water for green Milfoil in the backs of creeks on the North side of the river and yo-yo the ExCalibur XR-50 over the grass or slow rolling the Punisher Spinnerbait (3/8 oz.)over grass and around stumps. In case of frontal conditions that have dropped the water temperature, I move out a little deeper(5 or 6 ft.) and look for green grass that I can work the Jerkbait over with long pauses between slow short jerks and I will also
slowly work the Yamamoto Senko thru these areas. I use Shad or Bluegill colored Jerkbaits, White or White/Chart Spinnerbaits with Nickel willowleaf blades, Royal Red, Rayburn Red or Royal Shad ExCalibur Crankbaits and Black with Blue Glitter or Green pumpkin Senkos. Just remember find the warmest water you can find, new milfoil growth and start hunting fish by fishing slow and deliberate when you catch one fish there are usually more in the area. Over 25 years bass fishing experience

Capt. Jim BurksI have dedicated my life to the sport of fishing, and to the preservation of our resources so that we may all continue to benefit from our natural outdoors. I have loved the outdoors all my life and grew up fishing my local area lakes like Wheeler, Guntersville, Weiss, Pickwick and Neely Henry. I have a merchant marine "USCG" license.

I continue to fish these lakes and consider Lake Guntersville to be my specialty.  My best bass came from Guntersville a giant 11lb 2oz largemouth.

I fish Guntersville Lake 4 to 6 days per week all year round. This gives me a chance to really keep in touch with the fish migrations.
Give me a call and we’ll begin one of your Bass Fishing Adventures.
